Quick answer

Yes, chlamydia can cause bleeding — usually spotting between periods or bleeding after sex — because it inflames the cervix. But most people with chlamydia have no symptoms at all. It is easily detected with a urine or swab test and cured with a short course of antibiotics. Untreated, it can damage fertility, so any unexplained bleeding after a sexual risk deserves testing.

01Why chlamydia causes bleeding

Chlamydia trachomatis infects the cells of the cervix. The infected cervix becomes inflamed and fragile (cervicitis), so it bleeds easily — after intercourse, after a pelvic examination, or between periods. If infection spreads upward to the uterus and tubes (pelvic inflammatory disease), periods may become heavier or irregular, with pelvic pain.

02Other chlamydia symptoms in women

  • Change in vaginal discharge.
  • Burning while passing urine.
  • Pain during sex.
  • Lower abdominal or pelvic pain.
  • Rectal pain or discharge after anal sex.

Up to about 70% of women with chlamydia have no symptoms.

03Chlamydia in men

Men may notice discharge from the penis, burning urination, or pain and swelling in the testicles — but many have no symptoms. Men can pass chlamydia to partners without knowing. Untreated, it can cause epididymitis and may affect fertility.

04Other causes of bleeding between periods

  • Hormonal contraception, especially in the first months.
  • Ovulation spotting.
  • Gonorrhoea or trichomoniasis.
  • Cervical ectropion or polyps.
  • Pregnancy-related bleeding, including ectopic pregnancy.
  • Rarely, cervical cancer — another reason to get unexplained bleeding checked.

05How chlamydia is tested

The most accurate test is a NAAT (nucleic acid amplification test) on a first-catch urine sample, a vaginal swab (which women can often take themselves), or throat and rectal swabs depending on the type of sex. Tests are reliable from about one to two weeks after exposure. Testing for gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV at the same time is recommended. See where to get an STD test.

06Chlamydia in pregnancy

Chlamydia in pregnancy can be passed to the baby during vaginal birth, causing eye infection or pneumonia in the newborn, and may be linked to preterm birth. Pregnant women at risk should be tested, and treatment with antibiotics safe in pregnancy is effective. A test of cure is usually done after treatment, and partners must also be treated to prevent reinfection before delivery.

07Rectal and throat chlamydia

Chlamydia can infect the rectum after anal sex and, less often, the throat after oral sex. Rectal infection may cause discharge, pain or bleeding from the anus, but is often silent. Throat infection rarely causes symptoms. Tell your doctor about the types of sex you have had, so that swabs are taken from the right sites — a urine test alone will miss these infections.

08Pelvic inflammatory disease: when to worry

If chlamydia spreads upward, it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Signs include lower abdominal pain, pain during sex, fever, abnormal bleeding and unusual discharge. PID needs prompt antibiotic treatment to reduce the risk of tubal damage, chronic pain, ectopic pregnancy and infertility. Severe pain, high fever or vomiting may need hospital care.

09Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV)

Certain strains of chlamydia cause LGV, which can produce a painless genital ulcer followed by painful swollen glands in the groin, or rectal inflammation with pain and bleeding. It is less common but needs a longer antibiotic course. Doctors consider LGV in people with these symptoms, especially men who have sex with men.

10Talking to partners

Informing partners can feel awkward, but it protects their health and prevents reinfection. Keep the message simple: you were diagnosed with a common, curable infection and they should get tested and treated. Your doctor can provide information or a note for the partner's doctor. Partners from the last six months are usually advised to test.

11Treatment

Chlamydia is cured with antibiotics, commonly a seven-day course of doxycycline, or another antibiotic in pregnancy as prescribed. Avoid sex until you and your partners have completed treatment and seven days have passed. Partners from the previous months should be tested and treated. A repeat test after about three months is advised because reinfection is common.

12Complications if untreated

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) with chronic pelvic pain.
  • Blocked fallopian tubes, ectopic pregnancy and infertility.
  • Epididymitis in men.
  • Reactive arthritis.
  • Passing infection to a baby during birth.

13Prevention

Use condoms consistently, test after new partners, and encourage partners to test. Annual testing is recommended for sexually active people under 25 in many guidelines and for anyone with new or multiple partners. Read can STDs be cured?

15A practical checklist after a possible exposure

If you had unprotected sex with a new or casual partner, or a partner has told you they have chlamydia, follow this checklist. First, avoid further unprotected sex until you are tested. Second, book a chlamydia and gonorrhoea NAAT test about one to two weeks after the exposure, or immediately if you have symptoms. Third, add syphilis and HIV testing at the right time — and if the exposure was within 72 hours, ask about PEP for HIV straight away. Fourth, if you are diagnosed, complete the full antibiotic course and abstain from sex for seven days after finishing. Fifth, make sure recent partners are informed and treated. Finally, put a reminder in your calendar for a repeat test in about three months, because reinfection is common. Following these steps protects your fertility, your partners and your peace of mind.

FAQFrequently asked questions

Can chlamydia cause spotting?

Yes. Chlamydia inflames the cervix and can cause spotting between periods or bleeding after sex.

Does chlamydia always cause symptoms?

No. Most women and many men have no symptoms, which is why testing after a risk is important.

How is chlamydia tested?

With a NAAT on a urine sample or a swab, reliable from about one to two weeks after exposure.

Can chlamydia be cured?

Yes, with a short course of antibiotics. Partners need treatment too.

Can chlamydia cause infertility?

Untreated infection can spread and damage the fallopian tubes, causing infertility or ectopic pregnancy.

How do I get tested privately?

WhatsApp +91 70424 24269 or call +91 80109 77000. HIV & STD consultation is ₹2,000.

How long after treatment can I have sex?

Usually seven days after completing treatment, and only after partners have also been treated.

Can chlamydia come back?

Reinfection is common if partners are untreated. A repeat test after about three months is recommended.

Can chlamydia cause heavy periods?

If infection spreads to the uterus (PID), periods can become heavier or irregular. Get tested if this happens after a sexual risk.

Can I test for chlamydia at home?

Some services offer self-collected swabs or urine kits sent to a lab. They are accurate when collected correctly.

Does chlamydia cause bleeding in men?

Rarely. Men may have discharge or testicular pain; blood in semen or urine needs evaluation for other causes too.

Can chlamydia be passed through kissing?

No. Chlamydia spreads through vaginal, anal and oral sex, not through kissing. If you are unsure, book a private consultation on WhatsApp +91 70424 24269.
