Aids Managementwith Dr. Monga's
What is AIDS ?
AIDS is the final and most serious stage of an HIV infection. People with AIDS have very low counts of certain white blood cells and severely damaged immune systems. They may have additional illnesses that indicate that they have progressed to AIDS.
Without treatment, HIV infections progress to AIDS in about 10 years.
Difference between HIV and AIDS?
The difference between HIV and AIDS is that HIV is a virus that weakens your immune system. AIDS is a condition that can happen as a result of an HIV infection when your immune system is severely weakened.
You can't get AIDS if you aren't infected with HIV. Thanks to treatment that slows down the effects of the virus, not everyone with HIV progresses to AIDS. But without treatment, almost all people living with HIV will advance to AIDS.

What is ART?
- ART is a combination of HIV medicines that work by stopping the virus from replicating in the body.
- It's recommended for everyone with HIV and should be started as soon as possible after diagnosis.
- ART doesn't cure HIV, but it can significantly reduce the amount of virus in the body, allowing people to live long, healthy lives.
- With effective ART, people with HIV can achieve an undetectable viral load, meaning the level of HIV in their blood is too low to be detected by a test, and they cannot transmit the virus to others through sex.
How does ART work?
- ART works by targeting different stages of the HIV life cycle, preventing the virus from multiplying and damaging the immune system.
- Different classes of HIV medicines are used in combination to maximize effectiveness and minimize the risk of the virus developing resistance.
What are the benefits of ART?
- Reduces the amount of HIV in the body (viral load).
- Allows the immune system to recover and function more effectively.
- Prevents HIV transmission to others.
- Helps people with HIV live long, healthy lives.
- Reduces the risk of developing HIV-related illnesses.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ's)
-
1 How is AIDS treated?
AIDS is primarily managed with Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), which helps control HIV by reducing the amount of virus in the body. ART strengthens the immune system, lowers the risk of infections, and improves overall health. With early diagnosis, regular treatment, and medical follow-up, many people with HIV can live long, healthy, and active lives.
-
2 What is the difference between HIV and AIDS?
HIV is a virus that attacks the body's immune system, while AIDS is the advanced stage of HIV infection when the immune system becomes severely weakened. With timely diagnosis and consistent ART treatment, HIV can often be managed effectively, helping prevent progression to AIDS.
-
3 What are the early symptoms of AIDS?
Early symptoms may include persistent fever, unexplained weight loss, chronic fatigue, frequent infections, prolonged diarrhea, and night sweats. Since these symptoms can also occur with other medical conditions, proper medical evaluation and HIV testing are essential for an accurate diagnosis.
-
4 Can a person with AIDS live a normal life?
Yes. With consistent Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), regular medical check-ups, and a healthy lifestyle, many people living with HIV or AIDS can lead long, productive, and active lives. Following the prescribed treatment plan is essential for maintaining good health.
-
5 What is the most effective treatment for AIDS management?
The most effective approach to AIDS management is Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) under the supervision of a qualified healthcare provider. Regular monitoring, a balanced diet, infection prevention, and ongoing medical care are also important parts of long-term HIV management. Treatment plans should always be personalized based on the individual's health condition.
