What is Diabetes and How Does It Happen?
Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the body cannot properly regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels. Glucose is the main source of energy for the body, and insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, helps move glucose from the blood into the cells.
Diabetes happens when:
- The body doesn't produce enough insulin (Type 1 Diabetes).
- The body cannot use insulin effectively (Type 2 Diabetes).
- Blood sugar levels rise during pregnancy (Gestational Diabetes).
When insulin doesn't work properly, glucose builds up in the blood, leading to high blood sugar levels. Over time, this can cause serious health complications like heart disease, kidney problems, nerve damage, and vision loss.
Symptoms of diabetes
-
Frequent Urination / Excessive Thirst / Dry Mouth
Frequent urination, excessive thirst, and dry mouth are common symptoms of dehydration, diabetes, or other metabolic disorders.
-
Constant hunger, weight drop, and delayed healing
Unexplained weight loss, increased hunger, and slow-healing wounds may indicate underlying conditions like diabetes or hyperthyroidism.
-
Extreme Fatigue / Blurry Vision / Tingling or Numbness
Pins-and-needles sensation or loss of feeling, often in hands or feet. Inability to see clearly, like looking through a foggy window.
-
Recurrent Infections / Dark Skin Patches / Irritability
Diabetes or immune deficiency. Persistent sickness, skin changes, and mood swings disrupt daily life.
How to Control Diabetes Naturally?
Managing diabetes naturally involves lifestyle changes that help regulate blood sugar levels and improve overall health. Here are some effective natural ways to control diabetes:
- Eat a Balanced Diet - Focus on fiber-rich foods, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats while avoiding processed sugars and refined carbs.
- Exercise Regularly - Activities like walking, yoga, and strength training improve insulin sensitivity and help manage blood sugar levels.
- Maintain a Healthy Weight - Losing even 5-10% of body weight can significantly improve blood sugar control.
- Manage Stress - High stress levels can spike blood sugar. Practice meditation, deep breathing, or relaxation techniques.
- Stay Hydrated - Drink plenty of water to help flush out excess blood sugar through urine.
- Get Enough Sleep - Poor sleep can increase insulin resistance; aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep per night.
- Use Natural Herbs & Remedies - Ayurvedic herbs like bitter gourd, fenugreek, cinnamon, and aloe vera may help lower blood sugar naturally.
- Monitor Blood Sugar Levels - Keep track of glucose levels regularly to make necessary lifestyle adjustments.
By adopting these natural methods, you can effectively manage diabetes, reduce complications, and improve your overall well-being.
Diagnostic Tests for Diabetes: Which Test and When?
Detecting diabetes early is essential for effective management and preventing complications. Several tests help diagnose and monitor diabetes at different stages. The Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) test is taken after at least 8 hours of fasting to check glucose levels, with a reading of 126 mg/dL or higher indicating diabetes. Similarly, the Postprandial Blood Sugar (PPBS) test, taken 2 hours after a meal, helps assess how the body processes sugar, with levels above 200 mg/dL suggesting diabetes.
For a long-term view, the HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin) test provides an average of blood sugar levels over 2-3 months, with 6.5% or higher confirming diabetes. The Random Blood Sugar (RBS) test can be taken at any time during the day, and a reading above 200 mg/dL may indicate diabetes. Additionally, the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT), primarily used to diagnose gestational diabetes, involves fasting overnight followed by drinking a glucose solution and measuring blood sugar at different intervals, with a result of 200 mg/dL or more being a concern.
In some cases, a C-Peptide test helps differentiate between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes by measuring insulin production levels. If diabetes is suspected, a urine test for ketones may be done, especially if blood sugar is consistently high (above 250 mg/dL) or if symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) appear. Testing frequency depends on risk factors—those with diabetes symptoms, a family history, obesity, or high blood pressure should get tested annually or every 6 months, while pregnant women should undergo an OGTT between 24-28 weeks. Early detection through these tests allows for timely intervention, helping manage blood sugar levels and prevent serious complications.
