Quick answer

You can get PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) from a government ART centre or hospital emergency department free of cost, or from a private HIV doctor such as Dr. Monga Medi Clinic in Delhi NCR with online consultation across India. PEP needs a doctor's assessment and prescription, and it must be started within 72 hours of the exposure — the sooner, the better.

Possible HIV exposure in the last 72 hours? This is time-critical. WhatsApp +91 70424 24269 or call +91 80109 77000 now, or go to the nearest emergency department or ART centre.

01Why "where" matters less than "how fast"

PEP is a 28-day course of HIV medicines that lowers the chance of infection after a possible exposure — a condom that broke, unprotected sex with a partner of unknown status, sexual assault or a needle-stick injury. It works best when it starts within a few hours, and it is not recommended after 72 hours.

So the right place to get PEP is the nearest place that can assess you and start medicines today. If you are reading this at midnight, go to an emergency department rather than waiting for a clinic to open.

02Your options for PEP in India

1. Government ART centres and hospital emergency

Under the National AIDS Control Programme, PEP is free at ART centres and is available through casualty departments of major government hospitals such as AIIMS, Safdarjung, RML and LNJP in Delhi. Strengths: free medicines and standard protocol. Limitations: waiting time, limited weekend services at some centres and less privacy in a busy hall.

2. Private HIV doctors and clinics

A private PEP treatment for HIV prevention consultation offers one-to-one time with an infectious-disease-trained doctor, a confidential discussion and a prescription the same day. At Dr. Monga Medi Clinic you can visit Lajpat Nagar 4, Dwarka Sector 9 or DLF Phase 4 Gurugram, or consult online by video or phone.

3. Online consultation with medicine delivery

If you are outside Delhi NCR, a doctor can assess the exposure by video, prescribe PEP and arrange delivery where legally possible. Our dedicated site peptreatmentforhiv.com explains city-wise PEP access and teleconsultation.

03Can I buy PEP from a pharmacy without a prescription?

PEP medicines are prescription drugs. Some pharmacies stock them, but buying them without a doctor creates real problems:

  • You may get the wrong combination or an incomplete 28-day course.
  • Nobody checks your kidney function, other medicines or pregnancy status.
  • No baseline HIV test is done — and if you were already HIV-positive, two-drug or partial treatment can cause resistance.
  • Nobody plans your follow-up tests.

A short consultation solves all of this and usually takes less time than visiting several pharmacies.

04What happens at a PEP visit

  1. Risk assessment: when and how the exposure happened, and what is known about the partner or source.
  2. Baseline tests: HIV test, and usually hepatitis B, hepatitis C, kidney function and pregnancy test where relevant. PEP is not delayed for results.
  3. Prescription: the current recommended regimen in India is a three-drug combination, commonly tenofovir + lamivudine + dolutegravir, taken for 28 days.
  4. Counselling: how to take doses, handle side effects (mostly mild nausea or tiredness), and protect partners until follow-up is complete.
  5. Follow-up plan: repeat HIV testing, usually around 4–6 weeks and again at about 3 months.

05PEP near me: Delhi NCR quick guide

  • South Delhi: Lajpat Nagar 4 clinic, near Moolchand metro.
  • West Delhi and near the airport: Dwarka Sector 9 clinic. If you are around Mahipalpur, Aerocity or Palam, see our sexual health clinic near Delhi Airport area.
  • Gurugram: DLF Phase 4, Galleria Market.
  • Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and the rest of India: online consultation the same day.

Clinic hours are 10 am to 8 pm, Monday to Sunday. Outside these hours, go to the nearest emergency department and ask for PEP.

06What to tell the doctor (and what to bring)

The consultation is faster when you can answer a few questions clearly. Write these down on your phone before you reach the clinic or start an online call:

  • Exact time of the exposure, as close to the hour as possible.
  • Type of exposure — vaginal or anal sex, oral sex, condom slip or break, needle or sharp injury, contact with blood.
  • What is known about the partner — HIV status if known, whether they are on treatment, or "unknown".
  • Your medicines and health conditions, especially kidney disease, hepatitis B, pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Any previous HIV test results and dates.

Bring a photo ID if you are going to a government centre. You do not need to bring your partner, and you do not need to explain more than is medically necessary. Honest answers help the doctor decide whether PEP is truly needed — sometimes the risk is very low and medicines are not required, which saves you 28 days of tablets.

07After you start PEP: the next 28 days

Take the tablets at the same time every day, with or without food as advised. Set two phone alarms. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless the next dose is due soon — never double up without asking. Mild nausea, headache, loose stools or tiredness in the first week are common and usually settle; contact your doctor if you develop a rash, yellow eyes, severe abdominal pain or vomiting that stops you keeping tablets down.

During the course, avoid unprotected sex and do not donate blood. Plan your follow-up HIV test dates in your calendar as soon as you start. If you are anxious, talk to the doctor — anxiety after an exposure is very common, and good counselling is part of PEP care.

08Regional help across India

If you are in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai or any smaller city, you still have two routes: walk into the nearest government hospital emergency and ask for PEP, or start a same-day online consultation with our HIV doctor. City-specific information is available on peptreatmentforhiv.com. Whatever you choose, the clock matters more than the address.

09What PEP does not do

PEP lowers risk; it is not 100% protective, and it does not prevent other STDs such as syphilis, gonorrhoea or herpes. Use condoms until follow-up tests are clear, and consider an STD and HIV test at the right time. If you face repeated risk, ask about PrEP, which protects before exposure.

FAQFrequently asked questions

Where can I get PEP for free in Delhi?

At government ART centres and the emergency departments of major government hospitals. Carry an ID and explain the time of exposure clearly.

Is PEP available at chemists?

Some chemists stock it, but it is a prescription medicine. A doctor should assess you, choose the regimen and plan follow-up tests.

How late can I start PEP?

Within 72 hours of exposure, and ideally within the first few hours. After 72 hours PEP is generally not recommended.

Can I consult online for PEP?

Yes. A doctor can assess the exposure by video or phone and prescribe PEP. WhatsApp +91 70424 24269 to start right away.

How long is the PEP course?

PEP is taken every day for 28 days without missing doses, followed by HIV testing as advised by your doctor.

Do I need to bring my partner for PEP?

No. Only you need to be assessed. Information about the partner helps, but their presence is not required.

Does PEP work if I start it on day 3?

It can still help within 72 hours, but effectiveness is higher the earlier it starts. Do not wait until the last hours of the window.
